Spring Undergraduate Workshops
Month: April
Event Type: In-person
Open To: Active undergraduate and masters scholars
Main Topics: Graduate School Application Preparation, Scientific Outreach & Communication
Description: The Spring undergraduate workshops rotate in a two-year cycle, so that the content builds from their first to second year in the program.
- In year one: Graduate school application preparation, refining your personal statement, identifying programs, introduction to NSF GRFP
- In year two: Attending a PhD, which includes a panel of current PhD students (most of whom were in Cal-Bridge as undergraduates) and a workshop on how to best prepare for entering into a PhD program.
- Then both year one and year two scholars come together for workshops on Scientific Outreach or Scientific Communication (switches off each year so they wouldn’t get the same information twice).
- Scientific Communication workshop: Information includes: Discussing what constitutes plagiarism. Making their own website & social media presence. How to make an effective research website. Making compelling figures and diagrams. Writing abstracts.
- Scientific Outreach workshop: Information includes critical thinking, adapting research communication to a variety of audiences, professional networking and mentorship.
All workshops are held at UC campuses around the state of California. The Undergraduate workshops are planned to get scholars to a number of different UC campuses so they are familiar with the locations when they apply for graduate programs.
The in-person workshops are held on weekends so scholars don’t miss class. Travel is arranged and paid for by Cal-Bridge.
